The paper presents a comprehensive analysis of India’s Balance of Payments (BoP), examining its structure, historical evolution, and the key factors influencing its dynamics. The BoP serves as a vital economic indicator, capturing all economic transactions between India and the rest of the world across three core components: the current account, capital account, and financial account. The study traces India’s BoP trends from independence to the present, highlighting critical episodes such as the 1966 rupee devaluation, the 1991 BoP crisis, the 2008 global financial meltdown, and the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Particular attention is given to the persistent current account deficits, the volatility of capital flows, and the implications of trade imbalances and oil price shocks. The paper also explores the role of foreign direct investment, remittances, and global monetary trends in shaping India’s external sector. Drawing on empirical data and comparative studies, the analysis underscores the need for robust macroeconomic management, structural reforms, and prudent exchange rate policies to ensure long-term external stability. The findings suggest that while India has shown resilience in navigating external shocks, sustained BoP deficits pose risks to currency stability and investor confidence, necessitating a balanced approach to growth, investment, and trade competitiveness.
