Long-Term Energy Contracts and Their Hidden Costs: Analysing India’s Commitment Risks in Russian Oil and Nuclear Deals

Long term energy deals are usually brought up as an image of stability, strategic trust and win. However, behind the scenes of these patterns are significant processes that are not closely examined. With the growing oil supply and nuclear energy projects that have seen India and Russia liaise closer, there are concerns regarding the long-term consequences of the commitments. What seems to be a safe alliance can include trade-offs that cannot be noticed at first sight in formal contracts or media statements. The paper examines the changing character of long-term energy contract between the two nations with emphasis on uncertainties that envelop the contract. The sustainability of such arrangements should not be assumed in a time when alliances are changing, markets are variable, and geopolitical demands have never been as high as they are now. Sanctions, price volatility, logistical constraints, and technological dependencies can remodel the expectations which initially informed such partnerships. This paper aims to dig deeper into the problems in these contracts to get the real aspects of the strategic and economic understanding behind these contracts. The analysis of the changing global energy picture poses some key questions regarding sustainability and resilience and the actual cost of long-term commitments in a world that is becoming more uncertain.
