Natural Disasters and Their Impact on Vulnerable Communities in Jammu and Kashmir

Jammu and Kashmir, a region of extraordinary ecological fragility and geopolitical sensitivity, has been increasingly affected by a range of natural disasters including earthquakes, floods, avalanches, landslides, and the broader impacts of climate change. This article explores the multifaceted social and economic consequences of such disasters on vulnerable populations residing in the Union Territory. Using secondary data sources and empirical literature, the study analyzes how these natural hazards disrupt livelihoods, damage critical infrastructure, displace communities, and exacerbate poverty and health issues. The findings reveal that the socio-economic fabric of Jammu and Kashmir is highly susceptible to disaster-induced shocks due to a combination of geographical vulnerability, inadequate infrastructure, low disaster preparedness, and socioeconomic inequalities. Disasters such as the 2014 Kashmir flood and the 2005 earthquake have left long-lasting impacts on housing, agriculture, education, and mental health. The article also examines the role of government and non-government interventions in disaster response and resilience-building. It underscores the urgent need for integrated disaster risk reduction strategies, improved early warning systems, and sustainable development policies tailored to the unique topography and demographics of the region.
